Community Meals, Inc.
People who are homebound and unable to shop for food or to safely prepare their meals and who have no one at home to help them are eligible to receive meals.
Meals are delivered to clients five days a week (minimum service is three days a week), Monday through Friday, between 11:30a.m. and 12:30p.m. A delivery consists of a hot meals (meat, vegetable, starch or equivalent) and/or a cold meal (sandwich or salad, fruit/dessert). Diet meals may vary. The hot meal is usually eaten when received (and the cold supper for evening). However, the hot meals can be refrigerated and reheated later in the day. The cardboard/foil lid & container can be heated at low temperatures in the oven but the container should not be placed in the microwave. THE CLIENT IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE PROPER STORAGE OF THE MEALS ONCE THEY ARE DELIVERED. Any food not eaten immediately should be refrigerated. If you wish to cancel a meal or discontinue service, you must notify the office at least 24 hours in advance.
There is no delivery on Saturday, Sunday or the six major holidays: New Years Day, Memorial Day, the 4th of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas. Occasionally we are unable to deliver in severe weather when driving conditions are hazardous. The clients should have shelf or frozen food on hand for such occasions. During snowy months we ask that you arrange to have your entry stairs and walkway cleared so our volunteers can safely negotiate their way to your door.
Menus are planned and meals are prepared by Valley Dining at The Valley Hospital and are taken to the kitchen of Christ Church in Ridgewood, where volunteers pick them up for delivery.
Volunteers for Community Meals may ONLY delver meals to clients. They are not permitted to give medications, to lift or handle clients or to assist the clients with transportation or shopping.
Delivery of meals will suspended for a client being hospitalized with resumption of service upon his/her return from the hospital (or rehabilitation facility).
The Monday volunteers bring monthly statements for the cost of meals to the clients. Check should be made payable to Community Meals, Inc. If requested, monthly statements can be mailed to clients or relatives.
Clients who have questions about meals may call the Community Meals office at 201.447.8295.
The physical resources of the organization may limit the number of clients to whom service can be rendered.
